What makes a bedside table mid-century?
A bedside table is mid-century when it has the clean, plain lines of furniture from roughly 1945 to 1970. Look for five things: a body raised on legs that taper, often splaying outwards; a plain front; small knobs or slim handles, often brass; softly rounded corners; and a warm mid-brown wood. The legs and the plain front matter most.
All 42 tables in our mid-century bedside tables stand on legs, and 10 of them, 8 single tables and 2 pairs, show all five signs. The checks below work on any table you are looking at, ours or anyone else's.
Updated 31 October 2026 by the Bedside Table UK team. Every count below comes from the product pages of the 42 tables in our mid-century collection that day. The dates and the definition of the style come from the Wikipedia entry on mid-century modern.

Of the 42 bedside tables in the Bedside Table UK mid-century collection, all stand on legs, 34 are described as having tapered or splayed legs, 31 have plain fronts, and 10 show all five signs of the style (product pages, 31 October 2026).
Sign 1: legs that taper, and often splay
Check the legs first. Mid-century design is defined by clean, simple lines, and a body lifted on slim legs gives a bedside table a light outline. Tapered means each leg narrows towards the floor. Splayed means the legs lean outwards instead of going straight down. Many tables do both: on ours, 34 of the 42 are described as tapered or splayed, and 19 as both.
Leg length also sets the height. Our mid-century tables run from 40 to 68.5 cm tall, and the top should sit within about 5 cm of your mattress top. Not every leg in the collection is tapered: six tables stand on legs called Nordic-style, and two on angled gold-tone legs under a fluted front. They have the outline of the style, in a simpler or later form.
Signs 2 and 3: a plain front and small handles
The style is described as having "clean, simple lines and lack of embellishment" (Wikipedia, mid-century modern). On a bedside table, that means flat drawer fronts and small hardware: one knob per drawer, or a slim bar handle. On ours, 22 of the 42 have brass, bronze-look or gold-tone handles, knobs or leg caps.
Eleven of our 42 add something to the front: a carved cube pattern, bone inlay, fluting, a faceted front or a woven rattan panel. We list them as mid-century because they have the legs and the outline. If you want the strict, plain look, leave those 11 out; the other 31 have plain fronts.
Signs 4 and 5: soft corners and a warm wood
Rounded corners, or a body that is round, oval, half-round or capsule-shaped, soften the box. 21 of our 42 have them. Round and half-round tables have no corner at the front, so they are easier to walk past in a tight bedroom.
For colour, we would choose a warm mid-brown. 25 of ours come in one: chestnut, a warm red-brown; California walnut, a darker brown; roasted almond, a warm mid-brown; or winewood oak. "Walnut" on our tables is the colour of the finish, not the timber: the wood is solid mango, as on 34 of the 42. Our walnut bedside tables page explains the difference. Light finishes, on 19 of the 42, give a paler version of the same look.
Mid-century, Scandinavian or just modern?
The labels overlap. Mid-century modern is a period style, popular from roughly 1945 to 1970. Scandinavian design is a regional style that had a great influence on it, with the same clean lines and natural materials. A listing that says only "modern" tells you little about the style. So when a bedside table is sold as Scandi, Nordic or retro rather than mid-century, check the same five signs rather than the word.

Three to start with, and when to skip each one
The full look: Dove 45 cm, two drawers

Suits: a gap of 47 cm or more beside a bed whose mattress top is 50 to 60 cm off the floor. Why this one: the Dove 45 cm bedside table with brass handles has all five signs in one piece: tapered legs with brass caps, plain drawer fronts, slim brass bar handles, gently rounded corners and a warm mid-brown finish on solid mango wood, 45 × 35 × 55 cm. It is also sold as a set of two. Skip it if: you want splayed legs. The Dove's taper but go straight down; the Bubble 45 cm, at the same width, stands on splayed legs, with capsule-shaped drawers.
For a 32 cm gap: the narrow walnut finish table, 30 cm

Suits: a gap of 32 cm or more, and a mattress top 50 to 60 cm off the floor. Why this one: the narrow walnut finish bedside table, 30 cm, keeps the look in 30 × 30 cm of floor: curved edges, splayed legs, an open niche over one drawer and a darker California walnut finish on solid mango wood, 55 cm tall. Skip it if: you need two drawers. The Avon 30 cm has two, on tall tapered legs, 57 cm tall, and comes in a walnut finish with brass-coloured knobs.
For a tight walkway: Half Moon, 40 cm

Suits: a gap of 42 cm or more where you walk past the bed, with a mattress top 47 to 57 cm off the floor. Why this one: the Half Moon bedside table, 40 cm, has a half-circle top with a flat back against the wall, one curved drawer with a small antique-brass-look knob, and three tapered, splayed legs, in chestnut, 40 × 32 × 52 cm. Skip it if: one drawer is not enough. The Oval 45 cm has two stacked drawers on four tapered, splayed legs, in the same chestnut.
Want the rounded shapes only? Our curved bedside tables group them, on legs or not. For every table on tapered, splayed or angled legs, by width and price, see our mid-century bedside tables.
Questions
What is a mid-century bedside table?
A bedside table in the style of roughly 1945 to 1970: a body raised on slim legs, with plain fronts, small handles, soft corners and usually a warm wood. Ours are 20 to 50 cm wide and 40 to 68.5 cm tall.
Are mid-century bedside tables solid wood?
Not always, so read the material line. On ours, 34 of the 42 are solid mango wood. Six are engineered wood, four of them with a woven panel; one is mango wood with a rattan door, and one is listed simply as wood.
What colour is a mid-century bedside table?
Usually a warm mid-brown, but the shape matters more than the colour. On ours, 25 come in a warm brown finish, 19 in a light finish, and a few in black, white or grey wash.
Is Scandinavian the same as mid-century?
No, but they are close. Scandinavian design had a great influence on mid-century modern furniture, and both favour clean lines and natural materials. A Scandi or Nordic table that stands on tapered legs with a plain front has the mid-century look.
How we checked
We read the product pages of the 42 tables in our mid-century collection on 31 October 2026: size, material, finishes, and the description of the legs, the front and the handles. A sign counts only where the page states it; a leg the page does not call tapered or splayed is not counted as one. The dates and the definition of the style are taken from the Wikipedia entry on mid-century modern. Which tables we call mid-century is our choice: we include a table when it stands on legs with the outline of the style, and we say above which ones add decoration. The 2 cm gap margin and the 5 cm height rule are the working rules printed on our product pages. Prices are those of 31 October 2026 and can change; each product page shows the current one.
