Will a wide bedside table fit?
Add the bed width to two tables. A king (150 cm) with two 55 cm tables needs 260 cm of wall; with two 48 cm tables, 246 cm. A double (135 cm) with two 48 cm tables needs 231 cm. Then measure the gap beside the bed at its narrowest point, skirting board included, and take off 2 cm: that is the widest table that fits. Depth matters too: from 30 to 43 cm here, so check that a door or a walkway still clears the front.
For height, match the top of the table to the top of your mattress within about 5 cm. These run from 47 to 70 cm; the Tyne, at 70 cm, and the two panelled 55 cm tables, at 63 cm, suit a high divan or a deep mattress. The largest are 55 cm wide and 40 cm deep, in solid mango wood: the Tyne on spindle legs, 70 cm tall, at £358, and the two panelled tables, 63 cm tall, one with an open shelf and two drawers at £401, one with three drawers at £406. The fluted table with two drawers in a walnut finish, at £364, and the Itchen in washed wood, at £335 or £670 a pair, are also 55 × 40 cm.
